DESTINATION SHOWCASE - POWELL RIVER

If you haven't been there yet, you have probably heard about this hidden gem!  Powell River is a charming coastal community nestled between the rainforest and the Salish Sea. There are several different trail networks in the Qathet Regional District, offering something for everyone. There are hundreds of kilometres of trails between Duck Lake Trails, Penticton Maze, Millennium Park, West Lake, Suncoast Trails, and now the development of the gravity network on Mount Mahony. The Qathet Regional Cycling Association (QRCA) has coined the slogan “Ride Here All Year” because the temperate coastal climate sees very little snow throughout the winter, even on the gravity trails!

The Mount Mahony trail system has been in place since 2010 and has seen significant growth since then. This development has been part of a multi-stage plan, including a feasibility study and trail development plan.

Currently, the Mahony trails are more technical for intermediate to advanced riders. This development plan will include adding more green and blue descents and extending the climb trail further up the mountain.  “We want to develop our already awesome network by adding progressive trails that offer newer riders the opportunity to build confidence and enhance their bike skills,” says Jordan Marciniak, QRCA Trails Director.  “I'm excited to see how these new trails will impact the youth in our community by introducing them to this awesome sport, and giving them a safe place to progress.

After receiving section 57 approval last fall, the QRCA secured funding from Powell River Community Forest to get the project underway.  The PRCF has been instrumental in supporting the club and got the much-needed 35+ vehicle parking lot up and running, which should be completed early this spring.  The club has awarded a contract to build 6 new trails, including a much-needed climb trail.

This is just the first phase of construction. The QRCA is busy applying for more grants to get the next construction phase underway. As with any volunteer organization, the QRCA and local volunteer shredders and trail builders are very excited about this project and hope that those who come to enjoy the trails also give back to Trail Karma or donate to keep these trails running sustainably into the future and enjoyed by all!  To see more of this club’s incredible work or become a member - click here.

Powell River also has cozy cafes, locally-owned restaurants, and craft breweries; there’s no shortage of ways to relax and recharge before heading out for another day on the trails.
